Working as a volunteer in Setu Nepal has been one of the most fruitful experience in my life. This valuable experience has set a pattern in my life to keep on helping others and serve others in my community. Volunteering has made me more cognizant about how even a small contribution can add so much to someone’s life.
I have always been someone who loves to interact with people; know people’s journeys and experiences and SETU Nepal gave me that opportunity. I was able to participate in the “Income Generating Training Programs for mothers”, which was conducted for five days. I was able to enroll myself for two of the four sessions conducted in a year. That experience has definitely changed my perspective towards life in so many levels. I realized I had been living in a bubble all my life; never aware of the hardships people face in their life. Interacting with all the mothers; listening to their stories, their pain, their determination and willpower amazed me. I realized how strong women can be; when something breaks them they pick themselves up and become stronger ever than before. It was strange how only during the five days interaction; it felt that I had known them for years. They had poured their hearts out. I cried listening to their struggles and smiled seeing them happy. I even got a chance to conduct a Session on “Personal Hygiene and Reproductive Health”, for which I am really grateful. It boosted my confidence and made me realized there is so much to learn from each other during interactions which helps me as an individual to grow.
I immediately was so comfortable working in SETU Nepal since the very beginning. All the staffs were so generous and supported me during the entire volunteering days. I was able to engage myself in different tasks; helping in the annual report, editing the website, translating cases, making presentations, recording and filling and others. I helped the children in their studies and the children brought immense happiness to my life. During vacations I played different games with them, helped in their art and craft and made Christmas Cards. We celebrated Christmas together and enjoyed the festival. The children lightened my day whenever I met them and I developed a feeling of intense affection towards them.
I will always be grateful for the opportunities and cherish the days in SETU Nepal. I got insight into so many things and the entire experience has benefited me both in my career as well in my personal growth.
