On Thursday afternoon, Setu Nepal had conducted an event under UNTF project i.e. One day orientation on standing together against gender based violence. The venue for the event was Setu Nepal social Enterprise located at changunarayan ,bhaktapur. This project aimed to sensitize the duty bearer member on Gender based violence as well as to open a gateway to initiate and commence different and effective programs on preventing Gender based violence at changunarayan,Bhaktapur.
During the program we had an insightful discussion about effective programs and ways for ending the discrimination among women prevailing in our community. It was a meaningful event where we got to know about the present scenario of changunarayan regarding Gender based violence and discrimination, graphical presentation of analysis chart of women victim as well as the initiation step by Nepal government for eliminating the discrimination and violence.The event was successful to highlight the different reasons of victim such as lack of trust trust with laws and regulation,slow procedure to file nad fight against case,attitude of people,fear if society as well as lack of awareness and belief of high cost to file a case.
The program was even more significant when one of the Representatives from Nepal Police Mr. Sukdel Poudel presented a valuable presentation regarding Gender based violence prevailing in Changunarayan area. Him, highlighting the underage rape case increament, analysis of women victim ratio, Nepal government collabrating with different NGO and other organizations to support and uplift the life of victims of gender based violence was truly remarkable as in the coming days it will help SETU NEPAL to initiate program being focused and centric towards those problems.His statement “ When we take about violence we only think about women, and men are in shadowed however Violence has no gender it targets both women and men. The ratio of women victims is comparatively high however we cannot ignore the fact that there are several male victims as well.”. He also presented different real life incidents regarding gender based violence.
Mrs. Nila Kumari Ghimire,Senior Women development officer stated that different programs have been initiated for women empowerment in changunarayan area however despite the initiation,effort and hardwork the result is still unnoticable.She expressed concern about the recurrence of incidents due to the financial burden of legal battles, which often unaddressed due to a lack of support. Many activities are coordinated with the police at the community level, but numerous false cases are also reported, making it challenging to reassure community members of their safety. The municipality established a fund to combat violence, launched community awareness programs, and provided skills-based training to empower single women and those affected by violence. However, we have yet to achieve the desired results and are seeking stronger collaboration and coordination with NGOs."
All in all the program was effective with insight discussion and a place to bond and create a network so that the upcoming programs to mitigate gender based violence can be initiated and implemented.
