Pokhara- 3 days training workshop on rights, GBV prevention and accessibility to quality non-discriminatory service to the Setu Nepal Gallery.

Day 1: Understanding Gender and Violence

The session commenced with a brief introduction to Setu Nepal and its mission. The program then delved into core issues surrounding gender, sexuality, GBV, societal norms, and gender stereotypes. These discussions allowed participants to relate their everyday experiences of suffering, stigma, and discrimination to the broader systemic issues at play.

The afternoon session shifted towards an interactive group activity. Five groups were formed, each comprising seven members where various forms of discrimination were discussed.By engaging in these critical conversations, participants were able to vocalize their struggles and gain deeper insights into the factors perpetuating gender-based and societal discrimination.

Day 2:

The morning session centered around the core concept of health, emphasizing its physical, mental, and social dimensions. Facilitators led participants through a detailed exploration of how these aspects interconnect, using relatable real-life examples to drive home their importance. A major highlight was the discussion on stress and anxiety—participants learned about their root causes, symptoms, effects, and long-term consequences.

To promote holistic well-being, practical demonstrations of various yoga asanas were conducted. These sessions underscored the benefits of integrating physical activity into daily routines for maintaining overall mental, emotional, and social balance.

The afternoon transitioned into deeper discussions on sensitive yet vital topics such as HIV/AIDS, transgender issues, and the broader LGBTIQ community. Myths and misconceptions were actively addressed, with facilitators offering clarity on modes of transmission, consequences, and effective preventive measures.

Participants also received in-depth briefings on key medical interventions including Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, and Viral Load Reduction (VIRAL RDE). The session served to not only educate but also foster empathy and inclusivity, encouraging participants to adopt a more informed and accepting outlook toward those living with HIV and the gender-diverse community.

Day 3 _Legal Framework

The third day of the ongoing workshop featured impactful sessions addressing gender-based violence, support systems, and social stigma, led by key figures from the Nepal Police and OCMC (One-Stop Crisis Management Center).

The morning session was conducted by Sarala Dhakal, a representative of the Nepal Police from Kaski District. Through a structured presentation, she shed light on various forms of violence—physical, mental, and social—and pointed out that many victims still hesitate to report incidents due to fear and social pressure.

She outlined support mechanisms available for victims, including safe houses, OCMCs, and services provided by the Nepal Police. Dhakal highlighted the active coordination between police, support centers, and local organizations to ensure victims receive proper care and assistance.

Encouraging women to strive for financial independence, she stated, “Please keep yourself occupied in any small business—it can even be making incense sticks (bateko dhoop). Even on a small scale, it will definitely provide you with financial freedom.”

In the afternoon session, Sujana Dhungana, the focal person of OCMC, gave a comprehensive overview of the center’s role in supporting victims of violence. She explained the facilities offered, shared real-life case studies, and described how OCMCs work with police, NGOs, and health services to address violence and reduce stigma.

Dhungana also spoke about Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) and the importance of community collaboration in promoting inclusive support for individuals facing discrimination and health challenges.

The sessions concluded with a strong message of unity, awareness, and empowerment, encouraging participants to become active voices against violence and social discrimination.
