Setu Nepal had the privilege to participate in a valuable program organized by ONGD-FNEL in collaboration with Nepal Red Cross. Representing Setu Nepal, we appreciated the opportunity to engage with key stakeholders and explore avenues for future collaboration.
The presentation by the Deputy Director of Nepal Red Cross Amar Mani Paudel was especially insightful, highlighting their strategic plan and emphasizing anticipatory action in disaster preparedness. Notably, Nepal ranks 11th in the world in terms of vulnerability to natural hazards. The presentation emphasized the urgent need for disaster risk reduction, youth engagement, and the promotion of nature-based solutions.
During the brainstorming session, participants were divided into groups to reflect on potential areas of collaboration. Setu Nepal shared its perspective on how strategic partnerships can be built, particularly in the areas of training and awareness. We emphasized that gender-based discrimination is a significant factor contributing to the increased vulnerability of women during disasters—many are unable to swim or climb to safety during floods, which are common in Nepal.
We also highlighted the specific challenges faced by women living with HIV, especially during emergencies like COVID-19, where access to regular antiretroviral therapy (ART) becomes life-threatening. In this context, we proposed gender and HIV sensitization training as a potential collaborative area, leveraging the extensive network of the Nepal Red Cross across the country.
We are inspired by the discussions and thankful to ONGD-FNEL and Nepal Red Cross for this opportunity. Setu Nepal looks forward to deepening this dialogue and building meaningful partnerships that serve vulnerable communities across Nepal.
