Setu Representative came across a woman during a visit to the Central Prison in Kathmandu. The woman prisoner convicted of murder shared her plight about her elderly parents who were living in a village in Parsa District of Nepal. Thereafter, on a field trip to prison outside the valley, Setu Representative decided to meet up with the elder parents of the murder convicted woman.
The meeting was heart wrenching as the father (70) works as a laborer in a tobacco factory and earns Nrs. 230 per day. The mother (60) is an asthma patient and sleeps in an open field although they have a small one room apartment (with no electricity and other basic facility) since her husband has hearing problem and may not be able to help her during her asthma attack. The old father is the sole breadwinner and the times he takes a day off or is not able to go to work, the family of two sleeps on an empty stomach.
It was realized that tears are not always worth the grief. This time the parents shed tears for relieving their pain. In care phase is vital in supporting women in Prison. Therefore, family support and connection is imperative in psychological support phase. The elderly couple needs to be referred to an old age home so that it is easy for them to survive at such an old age (without having to work for survival). And at the same time, the daughter will also feel at ease and her remaining time in prison will be painless.
