Bipasha, 15 years old
Bipasha is from Makwanpur District and came to SETU Nepal with her mother, Santi.
Santi unknowingly married a man who already had a wife, and she and Bipasha later discovered that they were both HIV positive. Despite this, she was unable to leave her husband due to her health and the intense social stigma surrounding her condition. When Santi was nine months pregnant with her second daughter, she could no longer care for Bipasha. Santi came to SETU Nepal, where Bipasha received immediate shelter and medical treatment because she was sick and anaemic. Santi was referred to another organisation for a safe delivery, where she gave birth to a second daughter who is HIV-free. Later, SETU Nepal provided her with livelihood support to help her become independent and care for her younger daughter.
Bipasha lost her father at the age of eight due to complications arising from opportunistic infections. While her mother lived in their hometown together with her younger sister, Bipasha lived in Aarati home to meet her basic needs and to support Santi financially.
Rehabilitation Update
Bipasha was successfully reunited with her mother and younger sister in 2025. As her mother now runs a small tea and snack shop at a private school, Bipasha is able to support her by looking after her sister. She is in Grade 9 at school and is passionate about drawing. She has formed strong relationships with the other children and keeps in touch with them. SETU Nepal stays in contact with her family and continues to provide support in necessary areas.
