The story of Bina

Bina, 20 years old

Bina’s mother, Ramkumari, was just 10 years old when her parents sent her to work as a servant in another household. She met a man from India who frequently visited Nepal when she was 17. They married without their parents' consent, and four years later, Ramkumari gave birth to Bina. Bina was infected with HIV through her mother when she was born in a small village in eastern Nepal. Bina's father has been estranged from the family for several years and has denied any responsibility for them since Bina's birth.

Bina was admitted to a centre treating children with HIV in 2008, when she was only two years old. As the centre only provides support until the children's health stabilises, Bina was discharged and referred to SETU Nepal in 2012.

Rehabilitation Update

She is currently studying in grade 12 and finishing her secondary education (+2) in economics and accounts. Bina was successfully reconnected with her mother in 2025. They now live together, with Bina supporting her mother in her small hotel business.
