A Seventy- six years old woman, who was accused of trafficking girls, was imprisoned for six years and an Rs.25000 cash penalty. However, the woman is adamant that she is innocent and that she has been made the scapegoat for somebody else's crime. According to the woman, she acted as a witness for a transaction between two people. What the woman didn't know is that she was witnessing a transaction of girl trafficking. The police arrested her and the two people actually involved in the transaction are still roaming free.
The woman has not had any support from any organization, financially or legally. She was unfairly convicted of a crime which she hasn't committed and wasn't provided with a lawyer. The woman has one daughter but she does not frequent her mother and is not in a financial situation where she can help her. The woman who pleads to be set free has been in jail for over six years now.
The government has stated that in order for her release she needs to pay Rs.25000 cash. This amount is impossible for her to pay, and if she does not pay the penalty she will stay in jail for another two and a half years. To collect that fine, the government equates Rs.25 equivalent to one day staying in jail. As per government rule, every old woman gets old age allowance, if their husband is dead; they also get a widow allowance. This single widowed woman will be deprived of those government services.
Setu Nepal is committed to help this woman and end the injustice which this woman has bared through the years. Setu will help facilitate to support her in the future but at the moment we are unable to raise Rs.25000. We are now asking for your help to donate as much as possible to reach our goal and help this woman.
“I am at age of death and I don’t want to die inside jail.” A quote from the woman.
