Her Story:
Bina Basnet was admitted to a center that treats children with HIV in 2008, when she was just 2 years old. She is originally from a small rural village in eastern Nepal, around 350 km from Kathmandu. Bina was infected with HIV from birth, as her mother, Balkumari, is also a carrier.
When Balkumari was 10 years old, her parents sent her to work as a servant in another household. At the age of 17, she met a man from India who frequently visited Nepal. They got married without their parents' consent, and four years later, she gave birth to Bina. Bina’s father has been estranged from the family for the past five years, and they do not expect to see him again.
Bina’s life has been tumultuous over the past few years. Since the center only provides temporary support, children are discharged once their health stabilizes. After Bina’s condition improved, she was discharged and referred to SETU Nepal, as neither she nor her mother had a place to return to.
Despite her recovery, Bina and her mother have continued to face health and social challenges. They have no family support—Bina’s father is no longer in contact, and her grandparents are unavailable. Due to the stigma surrounding HIV, their rural community remains unwilling to help.
Current Status:
Bina is currently pursuing her higher secondary education (+2) with economics and accounts. She aspires to become a fashion designer.
Appeal:
SETU Nepal welcomes kind-hearted individuals to support Bina as she works toward a brighter future. Any form of support will be deeply appreciated.
