Success stories of Mushroom farming

Nabina Dahal
Nabina, 35 years, escaped from home at an early age due to fear of drunkard father and death of her mother in search of job and got married. After marriage, she got infected with HIV from her husband and was still tortured and abused even after separation. She was tortured by husband
after the birth of second female baby for a son. Her husband married another woman leaving her with children. Besides mental and financial problems, she was worried for her teen age daughter.

She kept fighting for her child and herself. She was misbehaved by community members but never gave up and kept seeking help from her friends and SETU Nepal. In the meantime, she got to participate in SETU Nepal’s income generating training which empowered her psychologically as well as financially. Sabina participated in the mushroom farming training and got a good result. She was overwhelmed to see the result and is very grateful towards SETU Nepal family for providing such trainings which helps in increasing her self-confidence and aiding her financially. From purchasing mushroom as expensive vegetable from the market to growing it by herself has boosted her confidence. She says,” doing hard work for 1 day and
earning for 3 months is true for mushroom farming. To gain more with less investment, mushroom farming can be the best option.

The skills she learned from the training kept her pushing in her journey of struggle and hardships. Her self-confidence, patience and persistence
eventually won.

Prakash Tamang
Being driver of SETU Nepal by profession, Prakash’s interest in mushroom farming has helped him financially and boosted his confidence as well. By attending just 2 hours of training, 1 hour of theory and 1 hour of practical class, he has yielded more than 50 kg of mushroom within 27 days. As he was interested in mushroom farming, training in the office was the best opportunity for him. So he managed his time and attended training for limited time and got a tremendous result. He says, “Mushroom farming doesn’t need any hard work. We just need to give time once a week and water it every day.”

He started by making 11 packets in the beginning and made 26 packets. With total investment of about Rs. 18000 he made a good earning. He sold 15 kg whereas 35kg got rotten and wasted. His relatives and friends are encouraged by his results and they’ve been asking for tips with him for the farming. His dedication and will power has turned his interest to his source of income.
